The sign you are waiting for – The amazing citizens – 2024
Congratulations. You now own an special work of contemporary art. It is extraordinary because its development was extraordinary up to this moment, and will probably remain so – thanks to you. As is often the case, there is a special story behind the story, and you will find out about it now.
In 2010 I began again to study the subjects of war, violence and citizens. In looking at the last 800 years of European history, I had to realize that all wars are increasingly wars against citizens. The heroes later in history are chosen by the winner unilaterally. So many of the real heros remain nameless and anonymous. Giving these citizens a face was the challenge. And giving other citizens the feeling of being noticed by exhibiting these amazing citizens in public spaces was the goal.
In a long tradition of struggle, societies have defined inalienable, absolute basic rights. These have been and continue to be attacked by the power elites. These rights hinder the exercise of power. If I want to experience the state of a society, I go to kindergartens, schools, museums and cemeteries. You can learn a lot there, about the people, their values and their well-being. Prisons would also belong on this list, but most societies lock some in and others out. You do not want to look too closely at the state of these absolute rights in your own prisons. And that would also be so important. The sovereign decides on his own state of emergency. Anyone who wants to assign basic rights is not a democrat but a hypocrite. Anyone who uses science as an excuse to obscure their own claims to power has neither understood science nor has any intention of acting democratically. Amazing Citizens in Civil Wars are citizens who preserve their own rights and defend those of their fellow citizens and even their enemies.
Exhibit this work of art in your environment. Make it visible! Invite people to look at it, tell them how you got this object. And ask the viewer: What do you think about the absoluteness of our basic human rights? Are they available to everyone? At all times? At all costs?
