Jo Pellenz – What we are – Objects – 2012

Places – spaces – buildings with their specific atmosphere and specific architecture have always been inspiration and drive for Jo Pellenz’s artistic response and/or intervention since the beginning of his work.

Humans, individually and en masse, are his central theme.

This is how image ideas emerged from spatial experiences, as well as directly space-related projects that artistically complement and reinterpret a specific location.Depending on the conditions of the location, these installations can be figurative or abstract.

His initial means of expression were painting and sculpture. In the mid-90s he managed to break out of the usual techniques by confronting himself with a single material: the finest transparent paper; Jeweler’s silk, which with its shadow effects offered the opportunity to rediscover basic artistic techniques such as drawing. This made it possible to develop forms of expression outside of the usual categories. The result is expansive installations, some supplemented by color spray.

The installations in public spaces are always temporary works of art that, once shown, dismantled into the individual paper elements, it becomes the artist’s property again. Due to their properties as a material basis, they are used again in collages, editions or, in large quantities, as a structuring material in strong canvas works.

In his „artsurprise series,“ Jo Pellenz incorporates paper elements from his installation UFER, Monschau – 2007
