Overview

Artsurprise is a social sculpture and itself a piece of art. The responsible artist Juan Petry mounted more than 70 vending machines in the last years temporary in art fairs, festivals and exhibition spaces or long term based in galeries and museums in Europe.

A typical artsurprise vending machine has 10-20 columns with buttons for different art types like drawing, painting, photography, objects… Some machines are modified and distributing special sub catergories (landscape, black&white, nudes in photography) or sophisticated art types like video art or audio art.

All pieces of art are distributed in specific sized carton boxes (which are also part of the artworks). The limited space in a box is 80 mm x 50 mm x 16 mm and the total weight including the carton need to be between 20 gr and 100 gr per box.

Each box is labeled with bar code and serial number and therefore a unique piece of art. The box should be handled as well as the artwork inside. Nevertheless it is – and will be – a confirmation of having an original piece of artsurprise!

Artworks are published in the artsurprise project in series of 120 unique pieces, each signed and numbered by the artist. The artist apply online for publishing of a series, if agreed by the management team, he will start the production and send artworks, business cards and inserts to the nearest artsurprise logistic center.

Important to know! In artsurprise each artist is distributing and selling his art under his own name for his own benefit. The artist is responsible for its work and the contract partner of the buyer of the box.

The artist can choose for each series between different business modells (V.I.P., TRUST, CASH – older series are still handled under the old modell firstIN&firstOUT).

Every year some artists gather in the artist residence CASAdelDRAGON in Spain to figure out new series or to inspire new artists to work out new series for the project.

Technical details

Each artwork need to have a size limited to 80 mm x 50 mm x 16 mm. Each artwork plus insert need to reach a weight of 20 gr and maximum 100 gr. Insert and business card are mandatory as well as a full address of the artist / publisher.

All material has to be delivered in one package to the nearest artsurprise logistic center. In this center it will be packed,labeled, stored and distributed to the available point of sales.

Special editions are only available by featuring art dealers or other business partners.

Accordung to national and international law the artsurprise box has to be charged with an original unique art piece. Sharp parts, liquids, seeds, fossils or any kind of dangerous or toxic components are absolutely forbidden. In case of doubts the artist should ask before he go into production.

Every series can only be published if: all 120 pieces are delivered at once, including business card and inserts. All data content is only available and all personal data of the artist is up to date and the given email is accessable.

Service agreement

The artist agree in distributing his art through all marketing channels of this project. From the side of Juan Petry the price of a box in a vending machine is binding. If the artist receive boxes according to the business modell TRUST he is free to sell these boxes for any price. The service agreement is binding as long as the project is running. It includes a full agreement in handling and storing personal data online and processing personal data in electronic devices and services.

Publishing agreement

The artist confirm for every single series the business modell and its special conditions. He is free to choose different models for different series. One Publishing agreement is binding for one series of this artist and ends by selling the last box out of one of the points of sale of the artsurprise project.
